LOVING, REACHING, SERVING…
“For you have been called to live in freedom – not freedom to satisfy your sinful nature, but freedom to serve one another in love. For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: ‘ Love your neighbour as yourself’” (Galatians 5: 13-14).

The Apostle Paul knew what is was to be a slave to sin in his former life but now he was enjoying the freedom to serve. So he does not mince his words with the Galatians or us! Freedom or licence to sin is no freedom at all because it enslaves you to Satan, others, or your own sinful nature. Christians, by contrast, should not be slaves to sin because they are free to do right and to glorify God through loving service to others.

When we are not motivated by love, we become critical of others. We stop looking for good in them and see only their faults. Soon the unity of believers is broken. Have we talked behind someone’s back? Have we focused on others’ shortcomings instead of their strengths? We must remember Jesus’ command to love others as we love ourselves (Matthew 22:39).

When we begin to feel critical of someone, we should make a list of that person’s positive qualities. If there are problems to address, it is better to confront in love than to gossip.

The three guiding principles of the church – universal and local – are Loving, Reaching and Serving. We must
love God with all our heart, soul and mind. We must love our neighbour as ourselves by appreciating diversity, valuing differences and watching out for the well-being of others.

We must reach people by any means possible (1 Corinthians 9: 19-22) always remembering God’s wonderful sacrificial love for each of us (John 3:16). In serving others, we have the great example of our Lord Jesus Christ: “For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45).
